Located in the Marais area of Paris, The carnavalet museum is dedicated to the history of Paris from the pre-historic times 9000 BC to present.
Located in Hotel Carnavalet, the museum occupies an old palace dating back to 1548 which was renovated and expanded in 1655. Madame Sévigné lived in this palace from 1677 – 1696. Many of her belongings are displayed in the museum as well.
The building is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It was turned into a museum in the 19th century. In 1989, the adjacent Hotel le Peletier, built in 1688, was added to this museum.
You will find over 600000 collections displayed in about 100 rooms.
Inside you will also find paintings, furniture, and some personal items of French notables. In the courtyard you will find the a statue of Louis XIV.
