Located along the Seine River, overlooking The Louvre Museum, there is an interesting history behind Musée d’Orsay. Musee d’Orsay was once a railway station serving Paris-Orléans, known as Gare d’Orsay but it was shut down in 1939. During the WWII, it was used as a mailing station for sending parcels to the prisoners of war. Once these prisoners were freed, they were greeted at this station.

In 1975, Gare d’Orsay was considered to become a museum but it was not until 1986 that Musee d’Orasy opened its doors as a museum to the public.

Many of the art works presented at Musee d’Orsay were brought over form The Louvre.

Inside you can find great important paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and furniture from 1848 to 1914. The wonderful works of some famous painters such as Van Gogh, Renoir and Monet can be viewed in this museum.
