The Basilica of  Sacré-Coeur is located on top of the Montmartre Hill, one of the highest natural points in Paris. As the result, you get a great view of the city from the front of the Church.

The idea of building Sacré-Coeur belonged to Alexandre Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury who proposed the building of Sacré-Coeur as a Spiritual remedy e to France’s recent misfortune during the war of 1870 between France and Germany.  Sacre Coeur was dedicated to the Scared Heart of Jesus as opposed to majority of other church’s in France which were dedicated to Virgin Mary.

The construction of this gorgeous white church began in 1875 and took about 40 years to complete.

Inside this Romanesque / Byzantine styled church you can find beautiful paintings and sculptures. Also, one of the largest bells in the world is housed at Sacre Coeur.

Getting to Sacre Coeur require some up-hill walking or stair climbing on your part, unless you take Montmratobus from Place Pigalle and get dropped off at the church.

The Funiculaire will take you from near place Saint-Pierre and rue Tardieu to rue du Cardinal Dubois, leaving you to climb a few steps to the church. It will cost you one metro ticket.

You can also enjoy a train ride through the Montmartre district of Paris which will take you to the Sacre Coeur as well. The train ride is about 40 minutes wtih Enghlish or French commentary. The highlights of the ride include Sacre Coeur church, the vinyards, Montmartre cemetery, Place du Tertre and Moulin Rouge. The train departs from Place Blanche and stops at Place du Tertre from 10 am – 6 pm (closes later during summer). Round trip cost  for adults 6€ and 4 € for kids. One way fees are: 4 € for adults and 3 € for kids. Accepting cash only.
