La Madeleine Church of Paris is located in an upscale neighbourhood, near Place de la Concorde and Rue Staint-Honoré. The construction of La Madeleine began in 1764 by the order of Louis XV. Due to dispute over its design, the construction was halted a few times over the years.
In 1806, Napoleon decided to model this incomplete structure after a Greek Temple, honouring his Grand Army, but instead decided to dedicate the Arc de Triomphe to them.
Under the reign or Louis XVIII in 1816, he made La Madeleine become a memorial church to the Royal Family that was guillotined during the French Revolution. The work still continued on La Madeleine from 1828 – 1842.
52 columns measuring 23 meters high surround this lovely monument. Inside you can find beautiful sculptures as well.
Around Place de la Madeleine, indulge yourself with treats at Fauchon, an upscale market.
